Resin Composite Bonding Q&A

What is a composite filling?

Composite fillings are fillings that are made of special, durable resins that can be tinted and shaped to match your natural teeth so they're essentially undetectable. They're used just like traditional metal amalgam fillings, to repair areas that have been subjected to decay or similar damage.

How is a composite filling applied?

Composite fillings are applied similarly to metal amalgam fillings, but with a few key differences. First, the area of the tooth is completely cleaned and prepared to accept the filling material. If the infection is extensive, a special medication may be applied to the space prior to the filling placement to prevent the infection from spreading. Once the area is prepared, the filling material is applied in layers, then shaped and smoothed for a natural, comfortable fit.

How do composite fillings compare to traditional amalgam (metal) fillings?

Most people prefer composite fillings because they can be tinted to match your surrounding teeth, essentially making them invisible to anyone other than your dentist and dental hygienist. But there is another key advantage for many patients: Metal amalgams use mercury, and although amalgams have been used safely for many years, some people prefer not to have mercury used in dental restorations. Composite fillings usually cost a little more than metal fillings, which may also play a role in your decision. Dr. Rayet will discuss your options with you during your office visit.

Are composite fillings as durable as amalgam fillings?

Just like metal fillings, composite fillings are made to be durable and long-lasting; and like amalgams, they may eventually need replacing, especially fillings in back teeth that are exposed to significant daily pressures from chewing and grinding. Regular dental visits and good oral hygiene habits will ensure your composite fillings last a long, long time.
