Whether or not a tooth needs to be extracted depends on many factors. In some cases, a tooth may be able to be preserved with a root canal and crown. But sometimes, the best solution is to pull the tooth and consider an implant or bridge to replace it. Dr. Rayet will explain all your options during your visit.
Dental extractions are most commonly performed in cases of extensive decay that can't be corrected with a root canal or when there is considerable risk of infection spreading to other teeth. It may also be used to correct overcrowding or when a tooth is badly damaged by trauma.
Not necessarily; some wisdom teeth come in straight and cause no issues at all. But in many cases, the mouth simply doesn't have enough room for the wisdom teeth to erupt from the gums normally. In those cases, wisdom teeth can cause painful overcrowding and alignment problems or they may become impacted, growing in sideways and causing neighboring teeth to become weak or otherwise compromised. Sometimes, wisdom teeth are located so far back, they can be difficult to clean, making tooth decay and infection much more likely. In any of those cases, extraction can be a good solution.
Thanks to today's pain-relieving techniques and products, extractions cause very little discomfort during or after your procedure. Any discomfort you do have can be managed with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.
