Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What is a crown?

A crown is a hard, durable covering that is placed over the entire tooth to restore its shape and provide strength. Crowns are often used to protect teeth that have large fillings or root canals, to cover unattractive dark fillings, and to cover and protect teeth that have become broken or have large cracks or chips. Crowns are also often used to protect the teeth used to support a dental bridge.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a device that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges comprise an underlying supportive framework and one or more prosthetic teeth. They attach to the teeth on either side of the gap using very strong adhesives.

What is involved in getting a bridge?

Bridge placement typically requires two or more visits. During the first visit, the teeth on either side of the gap are prepared for crowns and an impression is made to guide the design of the crowns and the bridge itself. A temporary bridge will be put in place while your permanent crown is being made. At the next visit, the crowns will be cemented in place and the bridge will be carefully attached using strong bonding agents. In some cases, the permanent bridge may be temporarily attached to allow your gums to adjust and prevent the development of sore spots. You'll come back at a later date for permanent attachment.

Do bridges and crowns require special care?

Bridges and crowns are designed to be cared for just as you care for your regular teeth, with regular brushing and flossing and regular checkups to ensure everything has adhered and is fitting properly. Cleaning around the bridge can take some practice. Dr. Rayet will provide you with complete care instructions once your treatment is complete. She also offers same day crowns.
